Give a hug or a thank you note
Today I got a short and simple email that completely turned around how I was feeling. A student had taken the chance to write one paragraph of authentic thanks and it was better than getting to sleep in or a day off. I can't tell the student how much that means and I'm very grateful.

The other thing it made did was made me pause and consider what thank you cards I have been neglecting to write. The messages I have not conveyed to my friends, family, co-workers and strangers I get to meet. So today I'm going to catch up on that back log and be sure to do something to let them know how they have positively impacted my life in subtle and simple ways that have a big effect on me. Now as someone that hangs around academics I feel as though I should cite all the incredibly intelligent and fantastic people that will tell you the importance thank you cards, but I won't. Simply think about how thank yo cards, especially when unexpected can completely change you day.
I hope you too can take a few minutes today and write that thank you card you have been thinking about sending. Sit down, be quiet and at a bit of energy to lift someone else's energy through the roof.
If not then just be sure to smile at people while you pass them, or give more hugs to your friends when you see them. It doesn't have to be an enormous act to make a huge difference.
