Life at Massey
Almost two months has flown past in my last semester at Massey College. Often it is misunderstood, because is hard to explain or the wrong message is conveyed. For over a year and a half I have struggled to explain what Massey is. Most fellows tend to just say, "think Harry Potter, we wear robes to dinner and have different houses." However, it is much more. Living here you have the chance to live among graduate students from the University of Toronto, and the chance to interact with distinguished Canadians that are Senior Fellows (U of T affiliated and nominated) and Quadranglers (not affiliated with U of T). From this people say, oh sounds like a great networking opportunity, but that isn't it either.
Finally, I have come to realize it is the community. Coming to breakfast and getting to know a student that is studying the power of the U.N Security Council, or genetics of heart defects through animal models, it has an incredible impact. Sitting a lunch and talking to a grey hair guest you find out that they won a nobel prize in chemistry or used to help run Amnesty International. It isn't the fact that they would make a good reference, or could get you a job. But, seeing the world outside of nursing and hearing new research and exchanging ideas ends inspiring and invigorating my work.
I'm so grateful to have been accepted and to have the chance to be here. I can't believe there is only a few months left. I'm definitely trying to contribute during my last month here, and will be sad when my time has gone. But for now I'm going to enjoy every minute of it.
